Special Locations Explained (Bathrooms, Pools and More)
BS 7671 applies extra requirements to special locations — such as bathrooms, swimming pools, saunas and construction sites — where the risk of electric shock is increased.
Part 7 of BS 7671 sets additional requirements for special locations — places where the normal risk of electric shock is increased, usually by water, confined space, or the nature of the activity.
Examples of special locations
- Bathrooms and shower rooms — divided into zones with rules on what equipment may be installed where, and on additional protection.
- Swimming pools and fountains — stringent requirements around water.
- Saunas — high temperatures affecting equipment selection.
- Construction sites — harsh, changing conditions and reduced low-voltage systems.
- Agricultural and horticultural premises — livestock, moisture and mechanical damage.
Why the extra rules exist
Water and confined or conductive surroundings dramatically increase the danger if a fault occurs. The additional requirements — on zoning, RCD protection, equipment suitability and bonding — reduce that risk.
On an EICR
Inspectors pay particular attention to special locations. Common findings include unsuitable equipment in bathroom zones or missing additional protection, coded according to the risk. Correct design in these areas relies heavily on RCD protection and protective bonding.
