Reducing Fire Alarm False Alarms
Reduce fire alarm false alarms by choosing suitable detectors, siting them well, maintaining the system, and managing activities like cooking, steam and dust.
False alarms are costly and dangerous in their own right: they disrupt operations, erode confidence in the system, and can lead to slower responses to a genuine fire. Reducing them is an important part of managing a fire alarm system well.
Common causes
- Unsuitable detector types for the environment — for example an optical smoke detector near a kitchen or bathroom.
- Poor siting — detectors too close to sources of steam, dust, fumes or cooking.
- Contamination and ageing — dirty detectors becoming over-sensitive.
- Building activities — hot works, cooking, aerosols, and dust from maintenance.
- System faults — wiring or panel issues.
How to reduce them
- Select the right detector technology for each area (see detector types).
- Site detectors away from steam, fumes and dust where possible.
- Keep the system clean and serviced through periodic servicing.
- Manage activities — isolate zones (with control) during hot works or dusty maintenance, then restore.
- Review the false-alarm history in the logbook and act on patterns.
Why it matters
A system that "cries wolf" is a safety risk because people stop responding. Keeping false alarms low keeps the alarm credible — so when it sounds for real, everyone acts.
