A monthly emergency lighting test briefly simulates mains failure to confirm every luminaire illuminates, with the result recorded in the logbook per BS 5266.
BS 5266 recommends a brief monthly functional test of emergency lighting. Its purpose is simple: to confirm that every luminaire illuminates when the normal supply is lost.
How the test works
The supply to the emergency luminaires is briefly interrupted — typically via a test key or switch (or a dedicated test facility in an automated system) — simulating mains failure. Each fitting should light immediately. The test is kept short so batteries are not deeply discharged (a full discharge is reserved for the annual test).
What to check
- Every luminaire and exit sign illuminates.
- No fitting shows signs of a failed lamp or battery.
- On restoration of supply, charging indicators return to normal.
Recording the result
Log the test in the emergency lighting logbook, noting the date and any faults. Rectify failures promptly. Consistent monthly testing is the simplest way to keep the system reliable and to demonstrate the responsible person is meeting their duty. The deeper check is the annual duration test.
