Fire Alarm Weekly User Tests
A weekly fire alarm user test operates one manual call point (a different one each week) to confirm the system triggers and sounders work, recorded in the fire logbook.
BS 5839 recommends a weekly user test of the fire alarm system. It is a quick check that anyone competent on site can perform, and it is the single most important routine task for keeping the system trustworthy.
How the weekly test works
- Operate one manual call point using the test key.
- Confirm the panel registers the activation and the sounders operate.
- Silence and reset the system.
- Record the call point tested and the result in the fire logbook.
Rotate the call points
Test a different call point each week, working through them in rotation. Over a cycle, this proves every call point and its wiring will trigger the alarm — not just one.
Tell people first
Let occupants know a test is taking place so the alarm is not mistaken for a real fire, and coordinate with any monitoring station so a test does not trigger an unwanted brigade response.
