EV Charger Maintenance Explained

EV chargers need periodic inspection, testing and servicing to stay safe and reliable — checking protection, connections, enclosures, software and charging performance.

An EV charger is electrical equipment exposed to weather and heavy use, so it needs periodic maintenance to stay safe and reliable. A neglected charger can become unsafe, unreliable, or simply stop earning its keep.

What maintenance covers

  • Protective devices — confirming RCD/open-PEN protection still operates correctly.
  • Connections and enclosures — checking for damage, water ingress, corrosion and secure terminations.
  • Charging performance — verifying the unit delivers the expected power and communicates correctly.
  • Software and firmware — keeping OCPP back-office and firmware up to date.
  • Cables and connectors — inspecting for wear and damage.

How often

Maintenance frequency depends on usage and environment. Public and fleet chargers in heavy use need more frequent attention than a lightly used workplace unit. It should be planned, not left until something fails.

Fitting it into compliance

Chargers form part of the fixed installation and are reflected in the site's EICR and records. Adding charger servicing to a planned-maintenance schedule keeps the whole installation safe and the chargers available when users need them.
